THE RULES

Quidditch is a fast, dangerous, exciting game in which two teams flying on brooms compete for points scored by throwing a ball – the Quaffle – through hoops on either end of a large grassy pitch.

There are three goal posts at either ends of a field. That field is called a Quidditch pitch. There are seven players on each side: the Keeper, the Seeker, three Chasers and two Beaters. One player is also appointed as the Captain. Professional teams will also have a manager.

Quaffle = 10 pts.Snitch = 150 pts.

This scoring seems unfair, but typically Quidditch is played in a series of matches, and the team with the most accumulative points at the end of the series is the winner.

Quidditch World Cup

The Quidditch World Cup is played every year, similar to the Muggles Olympics. However, what some may not know is that the action actually starts two years prior to the World Cup.

Any country capable of producing a Quidditch team is allowed to play in the World Cup. The first round, or 'group round', is when all the participating teams are separated into 16 groups, and over the course of two years, play each other. The accumulated points are tallied and the winners from each group progress on to the World Cup.

Each year, they compete for the Inter-House Quidditch Cup, an award presented to the Hogwarts House team that earns the most points. Unlike the Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw teams, the Slytherin team has no qualms with cheating and unsportsmanlike conduct.

It has been noted that the Slytherin team employs players of brute strength, rather then skill. An example of this is Gregory Goyle, who was given the position of Beater in his fifth year. The Slytherin team's cheers are usually very insulting, like that of Weasley is Our King.

US NATIONAL TEAM

The US National Team (USNT) will move toward a standing team model in preparation for the 2019 IQA Continental Games and 2020 IQA World Cup. Amanda Dallas and Michael “Yada” Parada will return as USNT coordinator and head coach, respectively. Miguel Esparza will return as the USNT photographer. The decision to move the USNT in the direction of a standing team is one that was not taken lightly. While it may seem like a no-brainer, it comes with its own pros and cons, just like any other system. After extensive discussions with European teams and USNT players and stakeholders, USNT staff and USQ management have decided to move in the direction of a standing USNT. The decision process for the USNT standing roster will take place over the course of Oct. 2018 through April 2019. The primary reason for the length of this process is that this roster will undergo minimal changes over the course of the next two years, with the next major round of adds and cuts scheduled for the 2020-21 USQ season.

PLAYER ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

While the IQA has not updated their eligibility requirements for the 2019 Continental Games, we are currently working under the assumption that they will remain the same as they were for the recent IQA World Cup. Every National Governing Body (NGB) or Emerging Area may set their own criteria for who can compete on their team, however, at a minimum, athletes must:

  • Be at least 16 years old by June 30, 2018.
  • Hold citizenship
  • Lived in the country for three years or more
  • Played Quidditch only in the nation
  • Have played in the nation (and not their nation of citizenship) for at least the last international season (September 2018-present).
